A genuine 1937 Roanoke Island North Carolina 350th Anniversary Commemorative Silver Half Dollar Coin, in Uncirculated Mint State Condition. This 90% silver commemorative half dollar was struck to mark the 350th anniversary of the Roanoke Colony’s founding. It was among the first English attempts to establish a permanent settlement in the New World. But it became the “Lost Colony” when its settlers disappeared without a trace. The obverse shows a portrait of colony founder Sir Walter Raleigh. On the reverse, Ellinor Dare holds her daughter, Virginia Dare – the first child of English parents to be born in America. To commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Providence and help fund a memorial to Roger Williams. Obverse – John H. Benson and Arthur G. Roger Williams kneeling in a canoe with his right hand raised as a gesture of friendship. His left hand is holding a Bible. A Narragansett Indian is standing on the State Rock shore with his hand extended, greeting Williams. In the left background, behind the Narragansett is a stalk of corn. The sun is rising in the background. The anniversary dates “1936” and “1636” and the words “RHODE ISLAND” are located between the inner and outer borders. Reverse – John H. A stylized state seal of Rhode Island. The Anchor of Hope is in the center of the coin with a ribbon above the anchor. This historic 90% silver half dollar commemorated the 300th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ landing at Plymouth, Massachusetts. The obverse depicts William Bradford – who governed Plymouth Colony for 30 years – holding a Bible. The reverse shows the Mayflower at sea. Most Pilgrim half dollars were issued in 1920 with no date on the obverse. Less than 12% were struck in 1921, with the date left of the portrait.
