The coin in the above pictures is the one you will receive. 1938 New Rochelle Half Dollar. The 1938 New Rochelle Half Dollar was one of several early commemorative issues that celebrated an event of primarily local significance with the issuance of a coin on a national scale. These coins were conceived and planned by the Westchester County Coin Club of New Rochelle, New York. Initially, Lorrilard Wise was engaged to prepare the designs for the coin. Her first models featured a Native American crouching in the grass and watching a boat carry settlers to the shore on the obverse, and the city seal on the reverse. The Commission of Fine Arts rejected the designs, recommending changes, which were executed and also rejected. Eventually, Gertrude Lathrop, who had designed the 1936 Albany Dollar, was engaged to prepare new designs for the New Rochelle Half Dollar. Her obverse design would depict John Pell and a fatted calf, which recalls the sale of the original land upon which the city now stands. One of the conditions of the sale was for Pell or his heirs to receive a fatted calf each year on June 24. Obverse inscriptions around the border include “Settled 1688″, “Incorporated 1899″, and “New Rochelle, New York”. The reverse design features the fleur-de-lis, taken from the seal of the city. Similar to the obverse, the single design element is presented in a flat and open field with sharply contrasted lettering. The inscriptions read “United States of America”, “Half Dollar”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “Liberty”, “In God We Trust”, and the date “1938”. Authorizing legislation provided that the coins should be dated 1938, without regard to when the coins were actually minted, and have a maximum mintage of 25,000 pieces. New Rochelle Half Dollar Coin Specifications. After several years lacking new commemorative coins, the 1934 Maryland Tercentenary Half Dollar was issued to mark the 300th anniversary of English colonists arriving in Maryland. The colonists were sponsored by Cecil Calvert, or Lord Baltimore, who is depicted on the obverse of the coin. Both the obverse and reverse were designed by Hans Schuler. The obverse portrait is surrounded by the inscriptions? United States of America? In God We Trust? The reverse of the coin features the coat of arms of Marlyland. A small banner beneath includes the motto? Fatti Maschii Parole Femine? Deeds are manly, words womanly. ? The inscriptions surrounding the arms include? The authorized mintage for the 1934 Maryland Half Dollar was a modest 25,000 pieces. The entire mintage was struck and distributed by the Maryland Tercentenary Commission. The Maryland Tercentenary Half Dollar is almost always encountered with a flat strike or friction at the highest points of the obverse portrait. This makes attractive, gem examples difficult to locate. Maryland Tercentenary Half Dollar Coin Specifications. The coin in the above pictures is the one you will receive. The Texas Independence Centennial Half Dollar had a rather ambitious maximum authorized mintage of 1,500,000 pieces, well above the modest levels of other recent issues. Eventually, the coin would be struck in five different years across three different Mint facilities. Most collectors consider the Texas Half Dollar to have one of the most beautiful or at least ornate designs with the series of early commemorative coins. Designed by Texas sculptor Pompeo Coppini, the obverse features an eagle clasping an oak branch with a large star in the background. The inscriptions around the image include “United States of America”, “Half Dollar”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “In God We Trust”, and the date. The central figure on the reverse of the coin is the kneeling figure of winged Victory. In her right hand is a spray of laurel, while her left hand rests on a representation of the Alamo. Beneath each of Victory’s wings are portraits of the Texas heroes Sam Houston and Stephen Austin. More than 200,000 pieces were struck by the Philadelphia Mint, but after sales reached 61,436, the remaining quantity was sent back for melting. Despite declining sales, the same coins would be struck and offered for the next three years. All issues remain relatively available today, with a premium attached to the low mintage 1938-dated coins. Texas Centennial Half Dollar Coin Specifications.
