The Maine Centennial Half Dollar was authorized by Congress to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the formation of the state of Maine. At the time of release there was a fair amount of criticism leveled at the design, which was based on the state arms. The maximum authorized mintage for the coins was 100,000 pieces. The Philadelphia Mint produced 50,028 coins, with the unsold quantity retained by the Maine State Treasurer, rather than melted. Designs for the coins were prepared by Anthony Di Francisci, designer of the Peace Dollar. He was enlisted by the Commission of Fine Arts to prepare models based on sketches from by Harry H. The obverse features the state arms with the Latin word? United States of America? The reverse of the coin contains a pine wreath with the inscription? In God We Trust? The coin in the above pictures is the one you will receive. As go most of the designs on the classic commemorative coins struck by the United States Mint between 1892 and 1954, the 1936 Bridgeport Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar contains a great degree of patriotic symbology. Among these artistic features is the reverse eagle, which received a modern treatment in keeping with the Art Deco aesthetic ubiquitous in many public works of the mid-1930s. While the obverse of the Bridgeport offers a conventional design arrangement, with a traditional side-view profile of Barnum encircled by inscriptions all corralled within the confines of the unadorned rim, the reverse offers something else. It literally pushes boundaries. In a move unique for American coinage, several elements within the reverse of the 1936 Bridgeport Half Dollar overrun the canvas space within the rim. This is evidenced by the tip of the eagle’s beak, proudly breaking the rim at the 1 o’clock position, the “M” of the word “UNUM” in the legend near the 4 o’clock spot, the “R” of “DOLLAR” at 5 o’clock, and “H” of “HALF” at 7 o’clock. The distinctive design helped drum up enough interest in the coin to move 25,015 examples through the channels of distribution. Their widespread dispersal resulted in the 1936 Bridgeport half becoming one of the most common of the classic commemoratives, though they are still highly desirable coins. They can be obtained in most any grade up through MS66 and are scarce but approachable in MS67. The coin in the above pictures is the one you will receive. 1936 Albany Half Dollar. Another local anniversary was celebrated with the issuance of a commemorative coin. The 1936 Albany Half Dollar was issued to mark the 250th anniversary that a charter was granted to the city of Albany, New York. The designs for the coin are viewed favorably by collectors, particularly the obverse which features a beaver gnawing on a maple branch. The designer of the coin Gertrude Lathrop had a live beaver in her studio at the time the coin was being designed. The obverse inscriptions include “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “In God We Trust”, and “Half Dollar”. The reverse of the Albany Half Dollar depicts Colonial Governor Sir Thomas Dongan presenting a charter to Peter Schuyler, Albany’s first mayor, and Robert Livingston. An eagle in flight appears above the scene. The inscriptions read “Settled 1614″, “Chartered 1686″, “1936”, and Albany N. Despite a request for a maximum authorized mintage of 10,000 pieces, the legislation set the issue at 25,000 pieces, which were all struck at the Philadelphia Mint. At the time the coins were being released, the public’s enthusiasm for commemorative coin issues had faded, amidst the flood of new issues and certain abuses of the program. Sales progressed more slowly than expected and remained on sale for more than six years. The net distribution for the issue was 17,671. The 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial Half Dollar was one of four different commemorative coins issued for the year. The coins were authorized to commemorate the soldiers of the south and recently passed President Warren G. Ultimately, the former president did not appear on the coin, which instead took focus on two heroes of the south. The obverse of the Stone Mountain Half Dollar features an image of Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson on horseback. In God We Trust? Appears above with thirteen stars, and? On the reverse is pictured an eagle poised on a mountain crag with stars visible in the background. Memorial to the Valor of the Solider of the South? United States of America? Gutzon Borglum was the designer of both the obverse and reverse of the coin. He had been commissioned by the Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial Association to create a monument to the leaders of the south on the large deposit of visible solid granite. His initial plans were for a carving 200 feet high and 1,300 feet wide. Completion of the monument would not take place until 1970 by a different sculptor and on a smaller scale. The 1925 Stone Mountain Half Dollars had a maximum authorized mintage of 5 million coins in order to raise funds for the project. This represented the highest authorized mintage since the 1892 Columbian Half Dollar. Despite a large number of enthusiastic supporters, sales were ultimately 1,314,709. The coin in the above pictures is the one you will receive. The issue commonly referred to as the San Diego Half Dollar was authorized to mark the California-Pacific International Exposition. The commemorative coins were first issued in 1935 struck at the San Francisco Mint, and later in 1936 struck at the Denver Mint. The obverse design was based on elements of the California State Seal. Inscriptions read “United States of America”, “Liberty”, and “Half Dollar”. The reverse image includes two of the exposition buildings, the observation tower and the Sate of California building. The words “California Pacific International Exposition” appear in a circle around the image, with “In God We Trust”, “San Francisco”, and the date in the center. The designer of the coin was Robert Aitken. After slow initial sales, the exposition sought and received Congressional approval to send back 180,000 of the unsold coins to be melted and reminted with the 1936 date. Despite these efforts, sales progressed even more slowly. Eventually, 150,000 of the 1936 coins were sent back to the Mint for melting. After the entire convoluted process, total sales were 100,224 out of the 250,000 maximum authorized mintage. For present day collectors this issue remains widely available and relatively affordable even in grades up to MS66. San Diego Half Dollar Coin Specifications.
