The Texas Independence Centennial Half Dollar had a rather ambitious maximum authorized mintage of 1,500,000 pieces, well above the modest levels of other recent issues. Eventually, the coin would be struck in five different years across three different Mint facilities. Most collectors consider the Texas Half Dollar to have one of the most beautiful or at least ornate designs with the series of early commemorative coins. Designed by Texas sculptor Pompeo Coppini, the obverse features an eagle clasping an oak branch with a large star in the background. The inscriptions around the image include “United States of America”, “Half Dollar”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “In God We Trust”, and the date. The central figure on the reverse of the coin is the kneeling figure of winged Victory. In her right hand is a spray of laurel, while her left hand rests on a representation of the Alamo. Beneath each of Victory’s wings are portraits of the Texas heroes Sam Houston and Stephen Austin. More than 200,000 pieces were struck by the Philadelphia Mint, but after sales reached 61,436, the remaining quantity was sent back for melting. Despite declining sales, the same coins would be struck and offered for the next three years. All issues remain relatively available today, with a premium attached to the low mintage 1938-dated coins. Texas Centennial Half Dollar Coin Specifications. The coin in the above pictures is the one you will receive. The Daniel Boone Half Dollar was minted to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the famous frontiersman, explorer, and folk hero. Originally, the coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint to coincide with the bicentennial year. During the next four years, the coins would continue to be struck, across three different mint facilities. On the obverse of the coin is a portrait of Daniel Boone. Since no known portraits of him exist, this is an artists conception created by Augustus Lukemann. The likeness looks decidedly different than the portrait of Boone, which had appeared on the previous1921 Missouri Centennial Half dollar. The inscriptions surrounding the portrait include “United States of America” and “Half Dollar”. The reverse of the coin features a scene of the frontiersman holding a chart of Kentucky and a musket, facing an American Indian holding a tomahawk. In the background a blockhouse stockade and a sun with rays appear. This was also designed by Augustus Lukemann. The inscriptions read “In God We Trust”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “Daniel Boone Bicentennial Pioneer Year”, and the date of issue. In the following year, additional coins were struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints carrying the 1935 date. Subsequent to the initial distribution, legislation was passed in Congress stipulating that the original design should be supplemented by adding the bicentennial year “1934” to the reverse of the coin. A smaller number of coins were minted with the “small 1934 on reverse” and came to represent a scarce variety. More coins continued to be minted and issued in 1936, 1937, and 1938. The final two years would have smaller net distribution levels as collectors began to grow weary of the endless string of varieties of the commemorative coin, issued years after the actual bicentennial. The coin in the above pictures is the one you will receive. As go most of the designs on the classic commemorative coins struck by the United States Mint between 1892 and 1954, the 1936 Bridgeport Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar contains a great degree of patriotic symbology. Among these artistic features is the reverse eagle, which received a modern treatment in keeping with the Art Deco aesthetic ubiquitous in many public works of the mid-1930s. While the obverse of the Bridgeport offers a conventional design arrangement, with a traditional side-view profile of Barnum encircled by inscriptions all corralled within the confines of the unadorned rim, the reverse offers something else. It literally pushes boundaries. In a move unique for American coinage, several elements within the reverse of the 1936 Bridgeport Half Dollar overrun the canvas space within the rim. This is evidenced by the tip of the eagle’s beak, proudly breaking the rim at the 1 o’clock position, the “M” of the word “UNUM” in the legend near the 4 o’clock spot, the “R” of “DOLLAR” at 5 o’clock, and “H” of “HALF” at 7 o’clock. The distinctive design helped drum up enough interest in the coin to move 25,015 examples through the channels of distribution. Their widespread dispersal resulted in the 1936 Bridgeport half becoming one of the most common of the classic commemoratives, though they are still highly desirable coins. They can be obtained in most any grade up through MS66 and are scarce but approachable in MS67. The coin in the above pictures is the one you will receive. 1936 Albany Half Dollar. Another local anniversary was celebrated with the issuance of a commemorative coin. The 1936 Albany Half Dollar was issued to mark the 250th anniversary that a charter was granted to the city of Albany, New York. The designs for the coin are viewed favorably by collectors, particularly the obverse which features a beaver gnawing on a maple branch. The designer of the coin Gertrude Lathrop had a live beaver in her studio at the time the coin was being designed. The obverse inscriptions include “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “In God We Trust”, and “Half Dollar”. The reverse of the Albany Half Dollar depicts Colonial Governor Sir Thomas Dongan presenting a charter to Peter Schuyler, Albany’s first mayor, and Robert Livingston. An eagle in flight appears above the scene. The inscriptions read “Settled 1614″, “Chartered 1686″, “1936”, and Albany N. Despite a request for a maximum authorized mintage of 10,000 pieces, the legislation set the issue at 25,000 pieces, which were all struck at the Philadelphia Mint. At the time the coins were being released, the public’s enthusiasm for commemorative coin issues had faded, amidst the flood of new issues and certain abuses of the program. Sales progressed more slowly than expected and remained on sale for more than six years. The net distribution for the issue was 17,671.
